The Ontario government has lowered the eligibility age to allow access to publicly funded colorectal cancer screening. Starting July 1st, the eligibility age has been lowered to 45 for all individuals and to 40 for those at increased risk. People at increased risk have one first-degree relative (parent, sibling or child) with colorectal cancer diagnosed before age 60.The FIT (Fecal Immunochemical Test) is a safe and painless test that checks your stool for tiny amounts of blood, which can be caused by colon cancer or some types of polyps (abnormal growths on the lining of the colon or rectum that can turn into cancer over time). You can do the FIT at home and it only takes a few minutes. To get your free FIT kit, speak with your primary care provider, who will order one for you. If you do not have a family doctor or nurse practitioner, call 811 (Health811) to request one.
